Loss of Libido - Here's how to increase your libido

The desire for sex - the libido - often makes itself quite unobtrusively out of the dust. By the way, not only in older people. Younger people are increasingly wondering about the whereabouts of their libido. However, before you resort to pills full of side effects, you could give your libido a boost with naturopathic measures. We introduce you to 9 libido enemies that can be responsible for a loss of libido. At the same time, you will learn how to naturally increase your libido again.

"More and more men in their late 20s complain that they have completely lost interest in their sexuality,"

once wrote a doctor. The couples therapist Volker van den Boom (1) confirms her observation: "Up until five years ago, it was still a rarity for a man to no longer feel like having sex, but since then I have noticed a clear trend change."

The situation is similar in the women's camp and there is no sign of a correction. Experts disagree about the causes. Psychosocial factors are usually named as an explanation. At the top of the list is stress, which is often mentioned for every problem. But is that really enough of an explanation?

The libido hides many mysteries

The loss of libido, the decrease in sexual desire, is one of those sexual dysfunctions (disorders) that have so far been researched more marginally. The focus of science is usually on erectile dysfunction in men and the limited ability of women to have an orgasm. Both of these problems can-but don't have to-be linked to a drop in libido.

Nobody really knows exactly how lust arises and how it works, because the interaction
ZENTRUM DER GESUNDHEIT

between the psyche, hormones and other metabolic factors is extremely complicated. The only thing that is certain is that it is the hormones that set the tone. An experiment at the University of Uppsala, which has since been regarded as a milestone in the study of sexuality, shows how strong it is.

Libido: just a dance of hormones?

Swedish biochemist BJ Meyerson administered estrogen to a castrated male rat, while a female rat was treated with testosterone (2).

When the animals were then brought together, something spectacular happened: the two were not only extremely willing to mate. Their sexual behavior was - in accordance with the hormone doses - inverse, so to speak:

The male arched his back while the female, in male fashion, proceeded to mount her mate. It then attempted to lick its nonexistent penis, as male rats usually do after copulation.

The experiment showed, among other things, that sexual behavior seems to be much less consciously controllable and instead can be fluenced biochemically much more easily than was previously believed - at least in rats. But what about people?

The LSD syndrome - when the libido goes

As is well known, libido often decreases with age. Here, too, it is hormonal changes that lead to a reduced desire for sex. But drugs and their side effects often have a negative effect on the libido.

However, if the libido dwindles at a young or middle age and the cause is unclear - at least from the point of view of conventional medicine - the phenomenon is quickly declared a "syndrome". In this case to "LSD syndrome", whereby the capital letters do not stand for the notorious drug, but for "low sexual desire" - little desire for love.

In reality, most causative factors have been known for at least 20 years. However, since they collide massively with economic and thus also political interests, a lot is done to keep the public from becoming too aware of them.

If your lust has also passed, then you should first start to fathom the possible causes.

Environmental toxins can ead to loss of libido

The number of today's environmental toxins is literally unmanageable. The German list of permitted chemicals already contains 6,000 different substances.

Fatal: Only for some of them there is a halfway well-founded risk assessment. Such is also almost impossible, as it would not only have to take into account the risks of the individual substances, but also the possible synergy effects (intensifying effects) of the chemicals among themselves and their interactions.

With regard to the subject of libido, chemical
or unnatural substances that act like
hormones are particularly relevant and
dangerous, which is why they are referred to
as endocrine disruptors or environmental
hormones in environmental medicine.
Environmental hormones irritate the hormone
system and in this way lead to considerable
damage and disturbances in the human
organism, including a loss of libido.
The previous belief that the endocrine system works according to the key-lock principle is wrong - at least if you assume there is only one key per lock. Unfortunately, is true that hundreds of different keys fit into the same lock - which Prof. Tyron B.

Hayes, who researches the phenomenon at Berkeley University, finds "very disturbing", as he put it in a corresponding documentary. This means that not only actual hormones can develop hormonal effects in the body, but also other substances, namely the environmental hormones mentioned.

Loss of libido from pesticides and plasticizers

The endocrine disruptors include, for example, the polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs for short, contained in coolants and insulating materials. Many insecticides and herbicides also have a similar effect to hormones, as do the plastic softeners, the phthalates, which have meanwhile become well known to the public.

In the smallest doses, they not only influence sexual behavior, but can also lead to male animals becoming feminized and females masculine - as some observations on amphibians and rodents, for example, show.

Phthalates can also have a hormonal impact on humans, namely with a loss of libido or even infertility (in men). Testicular, prostate and breast cancer are also suspected of being caused by endocrine disruptors.

Measures against environmental

Three measures are therefore extremely worthwhile in order to keep the effects of endocrine disruptors to a minimum:

• Give preference to organically grown foods.

Only drink filtered water (e.g. from the Drink Pure). Water cleaned in this way is free of pesticides and environmental toxins.

Since endocrine disruptors unfortunately cannot be completely avoided due to their large number and ubiquity, measures for drainage and detoxification should be applied regularly in order to strengthen the body's regulatory abilities and take the power away from environmental hormones in the long term.

Loss of libido due to electrosmog

We are surrounded by numerous radiation sources and fields on a daily basis. The mobile phone technology that has been in use for about 20 years is particularly effective in a negative sense. Higher and therefore biologically relevant frequencies are used here, as well as extra pulses that act like small impacts on the cells.

Both lead, among other things, to the electromagnetic tension in the body ncreasing beyond a healthy level. Up to times the normal voltage was measured in people who spend a long time in office spaces in a large city.

Once again, the endocrine glands are particularly sensitive to electrosmog . A study (3) by Colorado State University in 2002 showed that after 13 days of daily cell phone calls lasting more than 25 minutes, the release of melatonin from the pineal gland decreased.

However, melatonin is a key hormone that also plays an important role in sexuality. In one study, at least in rats, melatonin has been shown to increase libido and potency ( 4). A lack of melatonin, on the other hand, can result in a loss of libido.

The experiments of the Heidelberg researcher Prof. Dr. András Varga from 1991 ( 5)

After continuous irradiation of 180 fertilized chicken eggs, not a single chick hatched from an energy flux density of 2 mW/cm2. However, this value is still below the German limit!

At the same time, estrogen synthesis is stimulated by electromagnetic fields, with the result that some experts now regard excessive electromagnetic radiation as the

main factor in breast cancer in young women. Estrogens are often associated with vitality and healthy sexuality in women. However, taking estrogen only boosts libido when there is a lack of estrogen, while the other hormone levels are normal. However, estrogen dominance - i.e. an excess of estrogen, possibly in combination with a lack of progesterone and/or testosterone massively slows down the desire for love.

Measures against electrosmog

As was the case with environmental toxins, it is no longer possible to completely avoid electrosmog in our modern world. Nevertheless, there are countermeasures:

Turn off Wifi /WLAN and DECT telephone at least at night and only use an external microphone and headphones to make mobile calls. As a further protection, you can switch off the fuses for the sleeping area at night.

In big cities, where the radio antennas meanwhile create a dense electromagnetic field, the sleeping place can be additionally shielded by a Faraday cage in the form of a net made of silver threads. The net is attached like a mosquito net and of course not only protects against electrosmog, but also, in a practical way, against mosquitoes in summer.

dr Klinghardt, an authority on environmental medicine in the USA, observed that many healing processes only really progress when the electrosmog load is significantly reduced. Quote: "It's unbelievable what happens then!"

Loss of libido due to thyroid disorders

A loss of libido can also be a side effect of thyroid disorders. Diseases of the thyroid are now widespread, e.g. B. Hyperfunctions and hypofunctions, Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease.

Electrosmog can damage the thyroid gland, but so can the fluorides that are present everywhere, because these preferentially bind to the thyroid hormone T4 ( thyroxine) and thus render it inoperable. The result is symptoms of hypothyroidism, although the thyroid is actually still producing enough hormones.

The most aggressive hormone killer, however, is the mercury that enters the body from dental amalgam fillings and other sources. It is not only stored in the thyroid gland, but also migrates to the brain. There it influences the release of melatonin and somatropin and, by inhibiting an enzyme (GTP), also the structure of the so-called tubulin sheath of

the nerve cells. Of course, if this process continues, a loss of libido is the smalles problem you have.

Once the thyroid is compromised in any way and becomes underactive, the result is that the metabolism slows down. The energy available to the body decreases. As a result, the organism learns to use the little energy more sparingly.

First of all, he therefore switches off those functions that are not absolutely necessary for his direct survival, which of course primarily includes the libido. In the event of a loss of libido, the thyroid should always be considered.

Measures to protect the thyroid

In order to protect the thyroid from external influences, the iodine supply must be kept in mind.

Due to the now widespread forced iodization via iodized salt in all finished products as well as iodine-containing animal feed, which leads to iodine-rich milk products, there is hardly any risk of iodine deficiency, rather an iodine excess, which can often lead to chronic thyroid problems.

So when buying ready-made products, make sure that no iodized salt was used and it is better to use a natural salt without artificial dine additives in your own kitchen.

Nobody has to take part in the widespread fluoridation of the population via toothpastes containing fluoride, mouthwashes and table salt. Choose fluoride-free dental care products and unfluoridated salt. You can also find tips on how to eliminate fluoride from us.

The mercury drainage should be carried out with caution and, in the case of greater stress, ideally with the help of a therapist.

In addition, the thyroid is particularly happy about a dietary supplement with the vitamin B complex and selenium, which is a real mineral deficiency in Europe.

Brazil nuts are extraordinarily rich in selenium. If you choose a selenium supplement, then chelated selenium is particularly recommended. Bound to amino acids, its bioavailability is much better than traditional selenium supplements.

Magnesium and zinc should also be available in sufficient quantities for the thyroid gland. Like selenium, magnesium and zinc are preferred in chelated form. Not only are they easier to absorb and utilize by the organism, they are also much better tolerated.

Loss of libido from too much serotonin

Any endocrinologists are now of the opinion that the neural reward system with serotonin dopamine and norepinephrine has a significantly greater influence on libido than the sex hormones.

In fact, observations show that inhibiting the neurotransmitter serotonin can also directly and greatly increase libido. This is more or less contrary to the conventional wisdom about serotonin, since a deficiency is said to cause depression, among other things, and depression and libido just don't mix well.

For this reason, so-called serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are often prescribed in the treatment of depression - often with unsatisfactory effects. Because a side effect of these drugs is loss of libido

For this reason, so-called serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are often prescribed in the treatment of depression - often with unsatisfactory effects. Because a side effect of these drugs is loss of libido (6).

This is not surprising since serotonin is an antagonist of progesterone, which can be considered a key hormone for sexual desire. Many women with libido disorders therefore show the above-mentioned estrogen dominance, i.e. a progesterone level that is far too low in relation to the estrogen level.

The symptoms of estrogen dominance include, for example, premenstrual syndrome, menstrual cycle disorders, mood swings, difficulty concentrating, sleep problems and much more.

Measures against excess serotonin

For anyone who wants to increase their libido, the following therefore applies: caution with all medications and measures that can massively increase the serotonin level.

No tryptophan-containing preparations should therefore be taken, since the amino acid tryptophan is a building block for serotonin.

At the same time, women with clear symptoms of estrogen dominance should try to regulate their hormonal balance naturally. This often works very well with natural progesterone preparations or with the wild yam root, which contains a precursor of progesterone.

Loss of libido from hormonal contraceptives

The pill also leads to a mess in the hormonal balance and is one of the most common reasons for a loss of libido. It not only disturbs the balance of the sex hormones, but also the thyroid hormone balance.

Therefore, after many years of taking the pill, hypothyroidism is not uncommon. However, you already know how and why the thyroid can lead to decreased libido.

Another important "libido value" is that of the SHGB - a protein that binds testosterone and therefore destroys its libido-increasing effect. As a study by Boston University (7) on 102 current and former pill users showed, the SHGB value was significantly increased in all of them and did not fall as expected even after stopping the pill.

The head of the study, Irwin Goldstein, had already shown in earlier studies that the pill reduces testosterone levels - and thus also libido - by an average of one third.

Measures for the natural regulation of the hormone system

Former pill users, whose contraceptive has torpedoed the hormonal balance and thus the libido, first of all need patience. It can take several months for the hormonal balance to regain its equilibrium.

As already explained in the previous point, natural hormone preparations (e.g. Mexican Wild Yam or natural progesterone as a cream) can help very well.

Loss of libido due to obesity

Your own body weight is also very closely linked to the hormone system. Various studies (8, 9) have shown that men with a lot of abdominal fat in particular had up to 40 percent lower testosterone levels than men of normal weight and also suffer from a loss of libido more often. Testosterone deficiency is a real libido killer. The killing field begins below about 15 nmol/l in the blood (10). So get it tested first! And above all: reduce excess weight and belly fat !

In women, on the other hand, the libido can often be increased again by a slight increase in testosterone levels. In this context, it is important for women not to drink alcohol, as it lowers the testosterone level. Red clover preparations, on the other hand (e.g. 80 mg red clover extract daily for at least 12 weeks) increase the testosterone level. A good supply of zinc, magnesium and vitamin D is also important for a healthy testosterone level.

Measures for more testosterone

If obesity is the reason for a low testosterone level, then of course the first thing on the agenda is to regulate your body weight.

At the same time, as is well known, physical training is an option. However, this not only helps to achieve a higher weight via the detour of losing weight, but also increases it directly after the workout. Muscle training should have a more beneficial effect in this context than endurance training.

Pleasure-enhancing effects begin after just 90 minutes of exercise per week. Three times half an hour should be better than a single ordeal. (In women, higher testosterone levels also increase with exercise (strength training and cardio), but decline within 30-60 minutes of the end of exercise.)

Men who struggle with impotence in addition to their libido have to sweat more: around five hours a week or 3,000 calories burned reduce the risk of impotence by a whopping 83 percent - according to the results of a large study led by the Vienna University Hospital (11).

Here, too, you should spread the matter over several units: five times a week, 600 kilocalories each, would be ideal. However, on't overdo it either, because too much, almost always, has the opposite effect.

Loss of libido from too much sugar

Incidentally, the testosterone level is not

only throttled by laziness and obesity, but

also by sugar - at least in men. A recent

study from Massachusetts General Hospital

in Boston found a clear 25 percent drop in

testosterone two hours after drinking a

glucose solution (12).

So if you suffer from a loss of libido, you should significantly limit your sugar consumption. Do you suspect you have a sugar addiction? Then these tips will surely help you: Get out of sugar addiction

Loss of libido due to lack of light

The connection between light and libido is illustrated by the term "spring fever". The main reason for the increased desire in spring is most likely vitamin D3 (calcitriol), which is increasingly produced in our skin the longer the sunshine lasts (13, 14).

Vitamin D3 is a typical vitamin deficiency in central European regions, since it would need t least a quarter of an hour of sun on bare skin to synthesize it in the body. However the winter sun is not suitable for this due to the low position of the sun, which is why almost all people in northern regions have a vitamin D deficit by January at the latest. For quite a few people, this even applies all year round because they do not go out in the sun even in summer or use sunscreen that prevents vitamin D formation.

Supplementing with vitamin D is therefore an excellent measure to prevent a loss of libido, at least in the winter months.

Loss of libido due to psychological conflicts

Of course, with regard to the libido, the psyche also plays an important role. Psycho tips are therefore usually part of every catalog of measures that are intended to lead to an increase in libido.

It is true that psychological trauma and unresolved mental conflicts can undoubtedly lead to a loss of libido and block the libido, which is why a resolution of the conflicts should be sought in any case (of course not only to increase the libido). But don't forget that the psyche, in turn, is significantly influenced by hormones.

Of course, these natural libido-enhancing preparations can also be taken alongside the measures and further enhance the desired effect:

Vital mushroom Cordyceps increases potency and libido

The Cordyceps medicinal mushroom comes from traditional Chinese medicine and is considered a very effective and natural remedy for impotence and lack of libido - in both men and women.

Chinese scientists have already conducted numerous double-blind, placebo-controlled studies in men who complained of "decreased libido and other sexual problems".

The results were convincing. For the most part, those participants who took Cordyceps experienced a significant increase in their sexual performance.

In studies with women, more than 90 percent of the subjects were able to report an improvement in their previously poor libido during a Cordyceps cure

Plants that increase your libido

Some plants contain so-called phytohormones, i.e. plant substances with a hormone-like effect. They can therefore often have a balancing, correcting and regulating effect in the complicated endocrine system and in this way bring a healthy libido back to the fore.

Mexican Wild Yam can increase your libido

Mexican Wild Yam - the wild yam root from South America - contains a so-called progesterone precursor, diosgenin. Natural, i.e. body-identical, progesterone can be produced in the laboratory from diosgenin. However, wild yam itself also has mild progesterone-like effects (15, 16). It is traditionally THE tool for women who suffer from estrogen dominance and its consequences.

However, Mexican Wild Yam is also supposed to give men back a portion of vitality in a natural way - and without any feminizing effects.

Chaste tree to increase libido

Monk's pepper (Agnus Castus) is a shrub up to four meters high, which is also popularly known as chaste tree. Chaste tree is a natural prolactin inhibitor (17).

Prolactin is a hormone that, among other things, leads to relaxation and satisfied feelings after orgasm and ensures that you are not immediately ready to start again. Only people with extreme post-orgasmic prolactin deficiency can progress to the next round without interruption.

A chronic excess of prolactin - not just after orgasm can now reduce libido in both men and women. When prolactin is inhibited, it increases libido - and that is exactly how chaste tree works.

However, the right dose of chaste tree is obviously important here. Not taking enough is said to dampen libido (since prolactin levels rise) (18). Thus, a libido-enhancing effect is more likely to be expected at doses above 480 mg per day and above (19
Chinese herb dong quai (Angelica sinensis), known in Europe for centuries as "Chinese angelica", is also known as "female ginseng". It is a medicinal herb for women ith an estrogen-balancing effect.

The Chinese herb dong quai (Angelica sinensis), known in Europe for centuries as "Chinese angelica", is also known as "female ginseng". It is a medicinal herb for women

In traditional Chinese medicine, dong quai is often recommended for menopausal symptoms, a time when hormone levels fall and libido often dwindles.

Women's ginseng gently relieves menopause problems such as B. a dry vaginal mucosa, which of course also contributes to a reduced libido. Dong Quai therefore helps women between the ages of 45 and 60 in particular to revive their libido.

Compared to synthetic estrogens, which often lead to bleeding between periods, headaches, water retention and other undesirable side effects, this is less the case with dong quai. The plant is even said to offer some protection against breast cancer, a 2019 study showed (22). However, dong quai is said to have blood-thinning properties, so people taking anticoagulants/blood thinners should exercise caution (23). The medicinal plant should not be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding (23).

Capsaicin increases your libido

Capsaicin is the hot substance in chili Peppers. Capsaicin literally causes hot feeings to rise and promotes blood circulation of course also in the genitals.

Read here how capsaicin even cheated impotence in a study: Healthy and slim with capsaicin

Yohimbe increases libido in both men and women

The aphrodisiac yohimbine is found in the bark of the African yohimbe tree. Yohimbine is said to have relevant, namely blood circulation-promoting consequences, especially for the male genital organs. At the same time, the yohimbine is said to constrict the veins in the penis so that the erection lasts longer.

The brain is also affected, namely insofar as sexual readiness increases significantly.

In order to enjoy these effects, the intake of pure yohimbine would be recommended. However, medicines containing yohimbine require a prescription, and yohimbe extracts have not been available on the European market for several years. In the USA, however, these are still freely available.

Yohimbe bark, which can be prepared as a tea, is still easily available in our latitudes. owever, their effectiveness leaves a little to be desired yohhimbe is not a harmless dietary supplement, but rather a drug that can have unfavorable side effects, such as B. tachycardia, hallucinations, anxiety, convulsions, etc., so that we would rather recommend the other possibilities mentioned here.

Wild oats increase libido

Wild oats are said to increase testosterone levels, increase desire in both men and women, and also improve sexual performance. However, the effect is not achieved by eating muesli. The grass of the wild oats is used and not the grain.

Similar to yohimbe, however, an extract from wild oats is more effective than, for example, a tea, although women are said to need an even higher dose to increase libido than men.

Pomegranate for your libido

The seeds of the pomegranate are not only considered to be an extremely healthy food because they are rich in antioxidants, but also traditionally as a testosterone booster. But pomegranate juice is also said to have an extremely positive effect on libido.

However, one study showed that after rinking pomegranate juice for two weeks, GESUNDHEIT salivary testosterone levels increased by 24 percent in both men and women (20).

So it's always worth nibbling on the fruit of paradise every day during the pomegranate season - preferably together with your partner.

Maca increases libido

Maca is a potato-like tuber from South America whose libido-enhancing and aphrodisiac effects have long been well known and scientifically proven. Details about Maca including the corresponding studies can be found here: Maca - Superfood of the Incas

DIM to increase libido

DIM is a substance found in broccoli or broccoli sprouts or other vegetables of the cruciferous family. DIM is also available as a dietary supplement. The substance binds to the SHBG mentioned above. SHBG is now already occupied with DIM and can no longer bind as much testosterone. As a result, more active and libido-enhancing testosterone circulates in the body.

Yes, the level of free testosterone is said to increase proportionally with the intake of DIM.

Arginine increases your libido

Arginine is an amino acid. It is regarded as a direct stimulant and potency promoter - at least for men. The body cells can produce nitric oxide from arginine. Nitric oxide relaxes the muscles of the blood vessel walls. The blood circulation is promoted and of course also that in the penis.

Conclusion: many solutions or loss of libido

From a naturopathic point of view, there are many solutions for loss of libido. You can implement most of the measures presented independently. But don't forget to have your hormone levels checked regularly so that you can see whether you need to become more active or whether you are on the right track. Since love is also an essential aspect of being human in its physical expression, it is more than worth the effort that may be necessary.
