Swelling after breast surgery

Swelling after breast surgery is perfectly normal. It takes about two to three weeks for the swelling to subside and for your breasts to reach their final size. Bruising and numbness can also occur after breast surgery. If you have received an implant, this may be more or less palpable. The body has to be get used to the foreign body. Of course, slight pain is also part of it, but it gets less with each passing day.

Treat swelling after breast surgery

Basically, it takes a few days for the swelling in your breasts to go down. However, it is recommended that you treat the swelling after the breast operation for a few days at home with the help of cooling pads.

Our recommendation:

  • Cool the swelling of your breasts for about 3-4 days after breast surgery
  • Ideally three times a day for 20 minutes each time

Unilateral swelling after breast surgery

If you notice that one breast is more swollen than the other after breast surgery, don't worry - this can happen and is completely normal. The body, or your breasts, can react differently to breast surgery and show this with varying degrees of swelling.

Pain after breast surgery

You will not feel any pain immediately after the breast surgery because you have been given painkillers before the operation. How long you will have pain after breast surgery cannot be answered in general terms, since every patient has a different perception of pain. However, you will usually feel some pain for a few days after breast surgery. These can occur with jerky movements or activities. You should therefore take it easy in the first few days of breast surgery. Basically, we advise you to wear a support bra to protect your breasts from bumps and touches. In this way, you can significantly reduce possible pain after breast surgery.

Is chest and back pain normal?

When you sit up from a lying position, this is often felt to be uncomfortable because the pectoral muscles are required. In general, you should avoid jerky or strenuous movements immediately after breast surgery. This ensures an optimal healing process. Sometimes back pain also occurs, but in very few cases it lasts longer than a week. The cause of any back pain is the sleeping position: in the first 6 weeks after your operation you should not sleep on your stomach and in the first week you should also not sleep on your side.

Scars after breast surgery

Which scars can occur after a breast operation depends primarily on the type of operation itself. A breast augmentation only leaves a small scar on the lower edge of the breast. Scar formation during a breast lift depends on the size of the lift and the incision technique. If only the nipple is tightened, only a scar remains on the edge of the areola, which can be made almost invisible after about a year with a laser, permanent make-up or tattoo techniques. If the nipple is raised during a breast lift, it means that there will always be a small scar on the edge of the nipple.

What is scar care after breast surgery?

Scar care after breast surgery is an important issue. So that no unsightly scars remain after the breast surgery, you should carry out the scar care conscientiously.

Scar patch after breast surgery

Basically, you will be bandaged for the first 24 hours after your breast surgery and then before you go home, the bandage will be removed and replaced with small special clamp patches about four inches long and one inch wide. These clip plasters, also known as scar plasters, are glued to the small scars. You then continue to wear the compression bra and chest band, which provide optimal support. The special plaster stays on the wound for two weeks, since the threads dissolve by themselves, you don't have to do anything else. After two weeks you pull off the patches and then you see the very small cut in the underbreast crease.

You can then stick a new patch, which you will of course receive from us after the operation, on the scar. This special clip plaster from plastic surgery ensures that there are no gravitational forces in the area where it is applied. As a result, the scar has absolute peace and can heal very quickly.

Concrete scar care after breast surgery

In order to achieve an optimal result, it is important that you take great care of the healing of the surgical wounds after the operation and behave accordingly. Two weeks after your breast surgery, you remove the scar plaster and can now start with the scar care. You should clean and lightly massage the scars daily. A special scar gel is recommended for this purpose, so that the healing can proceed optimally. You can also perform lymphatic drainage yourself, which has a positive effect on the blood circulation in the tissue and allows the tissue to heal even better. You can and should also wear a special bra to support the operation, which helps the breast to be less stressed after the operation and immobilizes the breast.

Our recommendation:

 Use the Contractubex scar money.

Breast surgery without scars

Even though we have already made great progress in the field of aesthetic plastic surgery, breast surgery without scars is unfortunately not (yet) possible. However, there are different access routes that can lead to strong or weak scars. In your practice for breast augmentation in Munich – Dr. medical Patrick Bauer - Plastic surgeon, the scalpel has long since been banned from the operating room. Nowadays we work using a high-frequency electro-coagulation device, which enables particularly gentle operations. This also eliminates the need to pull the stitches after breast surgery, which also optimizes the healing process and counteracts scarring.
